The coverage of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) has recently been increasing in the media and for good reason. Although scientists and researchers are still trying to decipher the riddle of causation for this curious disease, the prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease is increasing at a very rapid rate!
New scientific projections suggest that by 2050 more than 13.2 million aging Americans will suffer from the debilitating effects of Alzheimer’s disease, and without an emphasis on prevention, this number could realistically grow even higher.

Increase Brain Function Naturally, Don’t Medicate & Mask the Symptoms
With summer vacation more than half over, the start of the new school year is quickly approaching. As anxious parents start the preparations for getting their children back-to-school, the parents of children with learning disabilities cope with the added pressure of a potentially rocky transition from an easy summer schedule to the structured school environment.
This transition can be very difficult for children diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) because they often have tremendous difficulty behaving in a structured environment, performing well academically and even simply getting schoolwork completed.

Contrary to expectations, diets high in the nutrient choline were associated with an increased risk of some colorectal polyps, which can–but do not always–lead to colorectal cancer, according to a study published online in the August 7 Journal of the National Cancer Institute.
Major food sources of choline include red meat, eggs, poultry, and dairy products. Choline is involved in a biochemical process known as one-carbon metabolism. Studies have shown that people with increased intake of other nutrients required for one-carbon metabolism, such as folate, are at a decreased risk for colorectal polyps. This is the first study to examine the association between choline and colorectal polyps.
Eunyoung Cho, Sc.D., of Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston and colleagues sent food-frequency questionnaires to women enrolled in the Nurses’ Health Study every two to four years from 1984 to 2002. They then estimated the choline content in their diets.
The researchers had hypothesized that choline intake would decrease the risk of colorectal polyps like folate does. But the results suggest the opposite–greater amounts of choline in the diet were associated with an elevated risk of colorectal polyps.
“Although our results were contrary to expectation based on choline’s role [in one-carbon metabolism], there is a potential biologic basis for the positive association that we observed…Once a tumor is initiated, growth into a detectable [polyp] depends in part on choline availability because choline is needed to make membranes in all rapidly growing cells,” the authors write. However, because this was the first study of choline and colorectal polyps, and other components of diets high in choline may be responsible for the association, the finding needs to be replicated in other studies.
In an accompanying editorial, Regina Ziegler, Ph.D., and Unhee Lim, Ph.D., of the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Md., describe the complexity of the relationship between one-carbon metabolism and the development of cancer.
“Clearly, one-carbon metabolism and its role in [cancer development] is more complicated than originally anticipated, and our understanding of the underlying mechanisms is probably incomplete. More research, and caution in developing public health policy and guidance, is warranted,” the authors write.

Alliance for Natural Health’s initiative opens the door to natural sources of vitamins and minerals
Since the European Court of Justice (ECJ) ruling in July 2005, the ANH, seemingly a lone voice in the crowd, has firmly upheld that natural sources of vitamins and minerals were outside the scope of the Food Supplements Directive (FSD). Almost exactly two years to the day since the ruling, this has now been confirmed by the European Commission, in what promises to be a critical victory for natural health.
The ANH has received a letter this week, jointly signed by two heads of unit at the European Commission, which indicates clearly that all natural sources of vitamins and minerals, which could have been subject to a ban EU-wide, will escape the draconian EU Food Supplements Directive, and will now be regulated as foods.
The European Commission’s letter confirms the broadest possible interpretation of an opinion given by advisory committee, The Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health back in October 2002.
In a strategic move in March 2007, the ANH made multiple submissions to the FSD Positive List. The nutrients used for these submissions were chosen carefully to test the ECJ ruling on natural sources and include wheat germ oil as a source of full spectrum vitamin E (mixed tocopherols), palm oil as a source of vitamin E tocotrienols and palm fruits as a source of provitamin A mixed carotenoids.
The letter from Mr Demetris Vryonides, Head of Unit “Legal Affairs” and Mr Basil Mathioudakis, Head of Unit “Food, law, nutrition and labelling”, states:
“We consider that wheat germ oil can be used in food supplements without having to be authorised and included on Annex II of the Directive. For similar reasons the dossiers on mixed carotenoids, food derived folates, [and two proprietary palm blends containing carotenoids and tocotrienols respectively] will not be processed further.”
Dr Robert Verkerk, ANH executive and scientific director, said “We are delighted to finally have this clarification from the European Commission on a point of law the ANH has been aware of since the ECJ ruling. The wider implications of this for the industry are far reaching and it effectively opens the door to functional foods and supplements containing nutrients derived from natural sources.”
Dr Damien Downing, ANH medical director, indicated, “This is a great relief for patients, practitioners and consumers and a vindication of the position that the ANH has maintained throughout. It is now time to focus on the array of other regulatory challenges facing the natural health sector.”
The ANH will continue to maintain scrutiny over the procedures used by the European Commission and the European Food Safety Authority in the handling of the remaining dossiers submitted earlier this year. The ANH has drawn attention to significant problems in the scientific methods being used to determine maximum permitted levels of vitamins and minerals, an issue that is subject to impending EU law.

EDITOR’S NOTES
About the Alliance for Natural Health (ANH) – >www.anhcampaign.org
The ANH is a UK-based, EU-focused, international, legal-scientific, non-governmental organisation that is working on behalf of consumers, medical doctors, complementary health practitioners and food manufacturers and distributors, to protect and promote natural healthcare, using the principles of good science and good law.
The ANH’s principal objective is to help develop an appropriate legal-scientific framework and environment for the development of sustainable approaches to healthcare. Within this setting, consumers and health professionals should be able to make informed choices about a wide range of health options, and in particular those that relate to diet, lifestyle and non-drug-based or natural therapies, so that they may experience their benefits to the full while not exposing themselves to unnecessary risks.
